UASB-IC Reactors: High-Efficiency Anaerobic Treatment for Industrial Wastewater

Imagen
The Internal Circulation (IC) Anaerobic Reactor , based on the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) principle, is a high-rate anaerobic treatment technology designed for industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of organic matter. The IC reactor represents an important technological advancement over conventional UASB reactors. Its design allows it to handle significantly higher organic loading rates within a much smaller footprint. The main difference—and one of its greatest advantages—is its internal circulation system . While conventional UASB reactors rely primarily on the upward flow of wastewater and biogas-induced mixing, IC reactors incorporate a gas-driven internal circulation mechanism that substantially increases contact between wastewater and anaerobic biomass. This configuration allows IC reactors to operate at organic loading rates (OLR) of approximately 20–35 kg COD/m³·day depending on wastewater characteristics, temperature, biomass activity, ...

Zero-Energy Wastewater Treatment Plants: Combining UASB Reactors and Constructed Wetlands

Can wastewater be treated without consuming electricity? One of the greatest challenges in wastewater treatment is the high cost of electricity. Energy consumption often represents a significant portion of the operating expenses of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), particularly those using aerobic biological processes. For small municipalities and communities with limited financial resources, paying the electricity bills associated with wastewater treatment can become a serious economic burden. But what if wastewater could be treated effectively without using electricity? Several years ago, I designed a series of wastewater treatment systems capable of operating entirely by gravity, eliminating the need for electrical energy under suitable site conditions. The main engineering challenge was to combine biological treatment processes that required no mechanical aeration or pumping while maintaining a relatively small footprint. To accomplish this, the sy...
